Pier Paolo Pasolini has been celebrated at 71st Venice International Film Festival.
It is always said that when Pasolini died, the Italian cinema died with him. Pier Paolo Pasolini was not only a great filmmaker, but he is also remembered outside Italy. He is a prolific poet and novelist, political activist, wildly inspiring film theorist, an erudite literary critic and an unorthodox dissident. Pier Paolo Pasolini was an independent thinker which was one his brightest virtues that enabled him to contribute to post war Italian culture. As an openly gay in a cultural moment that used to punish homosexuality, he never hesitated to voice his ideas. He also never feared to revise his thinking or expressing himself against closed systems of thoughts and representation.
Pier Paolo Pasolini died in 1975 after he was allegedly beaten to death by one or several gay youths on a deserted beach in Ostia. This scenario brought a sordid poetry for many people in reference to the association between the author’s death and his aesthetics.
To celebrate his life and the role he played in homologation and the current consumerist society, there is a new film about him. ‘Pasolini’ is a 2014 drama film written and directed by Abel Ferrara with William Dafoe playing Pasolini the poet .This film is about Italian film director Pasolini’s last days before his premature death. It is worth mentioning that this film has been selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 71st Venice International Film Festival. The film has also been scheduled in the special presentations section of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.
This contemplative and sexually graphic film about final days of Pasolini’s life is literate and very playfully, but at the same time frustrating. What is just but a part of Pasolini’s life is slight compared to the ideas that led to his remarkable output took place at a time when corruption was high among government officials, corporations, church, terrorists and artists like him were struggling to make Italy a better place.
The film begins with a series of interviews being conducted by journalists who question Pier Paolo Pasolini on his political plan. This is followed by Pasolini’s meetings with colleagues and friends to discuss his planned work (an unfurnished screenplay). The scenes of "Porno-Teo-Kolossal", Pasolini’s unfinished screenplay, features actor Ninetto Davoli, who took part in several Pasolini films as his lover and friend. He plays as a man convinced that the Messiah has been born and follows a shining star in the sky to where he believes the baby has arrived. Instead, he finds a bacchanalian orgy between homosexuals and lesbians engaging in an annual rite of conception to preserve the human race.
The film has incorporated many of Pasolini’s own words from his writings and interviews. The film also shows the problems facing the modern man in a society that the government fails to act accordingly. There is much anticipation that the film will perform well at the 71st Venice International Film Festival.
